This Korean jewellery chest adopts the structure of the bandaji, a traditional Korean storage form known for its hinged front opening. In this work, the bandaji idea is brought into a more intimate scale, transforming the language of furniture into an object for jewellery, reflection, and daily ritual. It is not simply a box with decoration applied to it. Its structure determines how the viewer encounters it: first as an image, then as a cabinet, and finally as a private interior.

The exterior is arranged around a peacock and peony composition. The peacock pair gives the front its sense of ceremony. Their bodies and long feathered forms bring movement across the rectangular plane, softening the strict geometry of the chest. In Korean decorative tradition, paired birds often suggest harmony and affectionate continuity, while the peacock also carries associations of splendour, dignity, and auspicious beauty. Around them, peonies bring fullness and honour, while butterflies introduce a lighter note of happiness and transformation.

This combination of motifs explains why the surface feels abundant yet composed. The peacock gives direction; the peony gives richness; the butterfly gives air. None of these elements stands alone. They are arranged to create a complete symbolic garden, one that suits the function of the chest. Jewellery, after all, is often connected with memory, affection, inheritance, and personal ceremony. The imagery therefore does not simply decorate the object; it prepares an atmosphere for what the chest is meant to hold.

The shellwork deepens this reading. Thin shell pieces have been cut and arranged so that the surface responds to light rather than merely reflecting it. The iridescence changes as the viewer moves, making the peacock feathers, flowers, and butterflies appear to shift between stillness and motion. Against the black ground, the shell colours become more concentrated. The darkness is important: it gives the imagery depth and allows the shell pieces to appear almost suspended.

The opening structure changes the experience of the work. Closed, the chest is frontal and pictorial, with the peacock motif commanding attention. Opened, it becomes architectural. The front panel lowers, the interior compartments appear, and the chest reveals its practical intelligence. Three smaller drawers on the left create a measured vertical rhythm for smaller jewellery. The right side is given to a mirrored section and necklace hanger, allowing longer pieces to be suspended rather than hidden. The lower drawers provide broader storage, balancing the more delicate compartments above.

This movement from closed to opened state is essential. When closed, the chest protects and conceals. When opened, it orders and reveals. The object therefore performs a quiet transition between display and use. It turns the act of choosing jewellery into a small ritual of opening, looking, selecting, and returning.

The back of the chest adds an important note of restraint. Finished with hemp cloth beneath a dark traditional surface, it carries a woven texture rather than a pictorial shell design. This decision gives the reverse a different character: calmer, more tactile, and less ceremonial. It shows that the object has been considered beyond its front face, while also allowing the front and interior to remain the principal visual experiences.

What distinguishes this chest is the balance between brilliance and order. The applied shellwork offers colour, movement, and auspicious imagery, but the bandaji structure gives discipline. The peacock and peonies speak outwardly of beauty and flourishing; the drawers, mirror, and hanging space turn that beauty inward, into private use. In this way, the chest becomes more than a place of storage. It becomes a small domestic architecture of care.

• EMS estimated shipping time is 7-14 days, depending on your region. Please note that Air Mail shipping method may not be available for all countries.
• Express Courier estimated shipping time is 5-10 days.
