This Korean mother-of-pearl jewellery box by artist Park In-ho is composed from finely prepared strips of luminous shell, arranged across an arched form in a disciplined sequence of horizontal and vertical lines. Rather than centring the design on a single figurative motif, the work builds its character through repetition, proportion and changing colour. Pink, turquoise, violet, silver and deep green tones appear and recede across the surface as the viewing angle changes, allowing the box to remain visually active without losing its underlying order.

The composition was made in this geometric manner to emphasise the precision at the heart of Korean shell craftsmanship. Each narrow shell piece must be prepared and positioned in relation to the next, so that separate fragments become a continuous visual field. Some strips run horizontally, others turn vertically, creating a rhythm reminiscent of woven construction or architectural patterning. The arched lid introduces an additional difficulty: the ordered shellwork must remain visually coherent as it passes over a curved surface, where even slight irregularities become more apparent.

What distinguishes this particular work is the introduction of small Hangul character panels among the shell strips. Set against dark rectangular grounds, the Korean letters create moments of stillness within the iridescent geometry. They do not function as a dominant inscription; instead, they punctuate the surface, allowing written language to become part of the decorative structure itself. Their presence gives the work a more distinctly Korean identity without relying on conventional pictorial symbolism. Geometry, colour and script occupy the same surface on equal terms.

This relationship between abstraction and language is important. The shell strips establish continuity, while the Hangul panels interrupt that continuity just enough to guide the eye from one area to another. The result is a composition that feels ordered but not mechanical. The letters introduce pauses within the pattern, much as spacing creates rhythm in written text. In this way, the box can be read simultaneously as an object of craftsmanship and as a quiet encounter between Korean material tradition and Korean written form.

The natural character of the shell brings another layer of movement. Its colour is never fixed: cooler blue and green tones may dominate from one direction, while rose, violet or silver appears from another. This shifting optical quality is central to the experience of Korean mother-of-pearl work. The surface changes with light, distance and angle, so repeated viewing reveals new relationships between the strips and the Hangul accents.

The arched lid softens the strict geometry of the decoration. Its curve gives the object a restrained architectural presence, while the polished metal fittings provide a deliberate contrast to the organic luminosity of the shell. At the front, the fish-shaped metal lock introduces a small figurative detail into an otherwise abstract composition, giving the act of opening the box a more ceremonial character.

Inside, the atmosphere changes from radiance to intimacy. A mirror is fitted into the lid, while the interior is lined in deep rose-toned velvet and divided into areas for rings, earrings and other small jewellery. The organised upper section can be lifted to reveal a deeper compartment beneath, extending the box from a decorative surface into a carefully structured object of use.

Seen closed, the piece is defined by geometry, script and reflected light. Opened, it reveals a quieter interior of mirror, velvet and personal storage. The movement between these two states gives the box its particular presence: outwardly composed and luminous, inwardly private and ordered.
