This piece is chosen by those who prefer to live with objects that reveal themselves slowly, through use rather than display.
“A quiet garden seems to open as the lid is lifted, its stillness shaped by patience and light.”
This two-tier jewellery box is conceived not as a container alone, but as a composed interior landscape. The lid and the upper stand are structurally linked, so that when the butterfly-shaped metal handle is gently raised, the interior unfolds in a single, continuous gesture. What is revealed is not hierarchy, but simultaneity: small and precious items above, freer forms below, all held within one measured opening.
The upper tier is proportioned for earrings, rings, and objects of intimate scale. Beneath it, the lower compartment allows for pieces unconstrained by size. Inside the lid, a mirror is quietly set—not as a statement, but as a practical presence, enabling reflection and confirmation without interrupting the calm of the interior.
Across the surface, thinly worked shell pieces are cut and arranged to form peacocks, flowering peonies, birds, rocks, and blossoming plum branches. In Korean visual culture, the peacock signifies dignity and protection, while peonies have long stood for prosperity and honour. The plum blossom, which flowers in the cold, speaks of endurance and moral clarity. Together, these motifs do not compete for attention; they coexist as they would in a garden painting, each element given space to breathe.
Beneath the layered shellwork lies a ground of traditional Korean hanji, dyed to a deep green and wrapped around the body before the decorative surface is completed. This green is not applied as colour alone, but absorbed into the paper itself, lending depth and softness to the surface. Against this subdued ground, the shell appears neither sharp nor ornamental, but quietly luminous, changing with light and distance.
The overall form remains restrained. The proportions are compact, the edges calm, and the metal fittings—most notably the butterfly handle—serve as functional punctuation rather than embellishment. Nothing here seeks immediacy. The box asks to be opened slowly, returned to often, and understood through repetition.
In this way, the object lives not as decoration, but as a companion to private rituals—holding, revealing, and safeguarding what matters quietly.
