This porcelain vase is shaped as a ho—a vessel defined by containment rather than display—allowing its rounded body and narrowed mouth to emphasise inward balance. Its surface is formed through donghwa (copper-based colouring), a tradition within Korean ceramics that privileges chromatic depth over pictorial narration. Here, copper-red tones emerge not as painted decoration, but as a result of chemical response beneath the glaze.

During firing, the vase underwent yobyeon, a kiln transformation that occurs when heat, flame, and air circulation interact beyond full human control. Copper, particularly sensitive to atmospheric fluctuation, responds unpredictably: pooling, breaking, darkening, or retreating according to conditions inside the kiln. For this reason, no two works bearing yobyeon effects can ever be replicated.

Across the vessel’s surface, deep copper-red fields meet pale blue glaze in irregular vertical passages. These transitions are not applied by design, but formed through gravity, temperature, and time. Fine crackling within the lighter glaze records cooling tension, while darker areas gather density where heat lingered longest. The result is a surface that shifts subtly as the vessel is turned, revealing no fixed front or dominant view.

The interior remains dark and quiet, reinforcing the vessel’s function as a space of containment. Even at the base, traces of glaze flow and firing marks remain visible, confirming the work as a document of process rather than an attempt at perfection.

This vase is not coloured by fire, but shaped by the environment fire leaves behind. Its red is not an image, but a residue—an unrepeatable record of conditions that occurred once and cannot be summoned again.
