Celadon Sanjo Gayageum Sculpture: Inlaid Wedding Procession Motif

Created by Icheon ceramic master Kwon O-hak, this celadon sculpture takes the form of a sanjo gayageum, one of Korea’s most recognisable traditional string instruments, and transforms it into a ceramic narrative object. Measuring approximately 56 cm across, it is not intended for performance. Instead, the artist has recreated the physical language of the gayageum in clay, preserving its elongated profile, strings and characteristic components while allowing the broad ceramic body to become a surface for storytelling.

The central subject is a traditional Korean wedding procession. Read from left to right, the scene follows the movement surrounding the groom’s journey to the bride’s home and the subsequent passage towards the groom’s household after the bride has joined the procession. Rather than reducing the event to a single ceremonial emblem, the composition unfolds through multiple figures. Attendants carry belongings, individuals walk alongside the procession, an animal and a covered conveyance appear within the sequence, and differences in clothing, posture and gesture give each participant a distinct role.

This choice of subject gives the work particular warmth. Traditional marriage in Korea was never represented only by the bride and groom; it involved households, attendants, movement and communal participation. By spreading the procession across the long body of the gayageum, Kwon allows the ceremony to become a journey rather than a fixed scene. The horizontal form of the instrument is therefore essential to the composition: it provides a natural direction through which the narrative can proceed.

The celadon body also determines how that narrative is perceived. Beneath the fine crackled glaze, the pale blue-green surface establishes a restrained field against which the darker lines of the figures become legible. Red accents appear sparingly, drawing attention to selected passages without disturbing the overall calm. The decoration is integrated through a demanding sanggam process, requiring the imagery to be carefully organised across a large ceramic surface before firing.

The scale makes this considerably more difficult than the image first suggests. A long, relatively flat ceramic body is vulnerable during drying and firing: uneven contraction can cause distortion, cracking or collapse. The challenge is not simply to make a large piece of clay, but to preserve the precise horizontal relationship required for the gayageum form while subjecting the body to the extreme conditions of the kiln.

The narrative decoration introduces a second order of difficulty. The procession extends across the same surface that must also accommodate strings, bridges and the instrument’s structural organisation. Figures therefore cannot be placed independently of the gayageum. They are seen through and beneath the strings, while the small bridges interrupt the image at measured intervals. Rather than treating these interruptions as obstacles, the composition allows them to become part of the visual experience.

This is especially apparent in close viewing. The pale strings form a repeated horizontal rhythm, while the individual anjok bridges rise from the celadon surface with a more tactile, earthen presence. Behind them, figures continue their passage. The eye moves alternately between instrument and image: first reading a musical structure, then discovering a procession within it.

Although this is a sculptural work rather than a playable instrument, Kwon has reproduced the gayageum with close attention to its traditional parts, including details identified as anjok, hakseul and budeul. This matters because the work does not merely borrow the outline of a gayageum as a decorative frame. Its identity depends upon the recognisable structure of the instrument itself.

The result is an object in which Korean ceramic tradition, musical form and wedding culture meet without one becoming subordinate to the other. The gayageum provides rhythm and structure; the wedding procession provides human movement; celadon holds both within a single surface.

What remains is not the simulation of music, but something quieter: a ceramic instrument carrying the memory of a procession, its figures continuing their journey beneath strings that will never be sounded.
