Silk Norigae: Embroidered Cicada with Ten Tassels

This elegant Korean silk norigae features an embroidered cicada—a motif long cherished for its clarity of spirit and quiet strength. In classical writings, the cicada is described as a creature sustained only by clear morning dew, living high among branches far from worldly dust. It has therefore come to symbolise purity, sincerity, and a noble sense of detachment.

Hidden underground for years before emerging into the sunlight, the cicada also carries associations of renewal, happiness, and youthful transformation. Within the Confucian tradition, it is admired for the Five Virtues: refinement, purity, integrity, frugality, and trustworthiness—qualities quietly expressed in the symmetry and poise of the stitched wings.

Below the embroidered body, ten flowing silk tassels cascade in gentle gradations of red, green, blue, and gold. Their movement introduces a subtle rhythm, creating a soft interplay between colour and shadow. Each strand is meticulously wrapped and weighted, allowing the tassels to fall with calm precision—neither too formal nor too decorative, but with a balanced presence that feels timeless.

The norigae has long held a special role in Korean attire, adorning the garments of women from court to countryside. Beyond personal ornament, it served as a charm of blessing—its colours, motifs, and knots chosen to invite good fortune, longevity, and quiet joy.

Today, displayed on a wooden lattice frame or hung from a rustic ‘Koddure‘—a traditional wooden cattle nose-ring once thought to ward off misfortune and guard the household’s fortune—the piece gains a quiet, almost playful layer of meaning. The contrast between silk threads and natural wood creates a gentle harmony, making the norigae feel at once traditional and contemporary, intimate yet refined.

Shipping rates and delivery estimates

• All orders are shipped by K-Packet, Air mail, EMS, Express Courier (UPS, Fedex, DHL Etc).
• K-Packet shipping is basic shipping service. K-Packet estimated shipping time is 14-21 days, depending on your region. If weight is over 2kg, K-packet service would be converted to Air Mail.
• EMS estimated shipping time is 7-14 days, depending on your region. Please note that Air Mail shipping method may not be available for all countries.
• Express Courier estimated shipping time is 5-10 days.
• Shipping charges for your order will be calculated and displayed at checkout.
• Parcels are sent tracked where possible, and you will receive an automated email with a tracking number once your order is processed.

Damages

• Artinko is not liable for any products damaged or lost during shipping. If you received your order damaged, please take a picture of it and contact us as soon as possible and we'll try to resolve it.
