This set tends to remain with those who recognise harmony not in sameness, but in the quiet conversation between related forms.
“Two surfaces speak across space—one holding volume, the other holding silence.”
This set brings together a celadon vase and a celadon plate, conceived not as matching objects, but as a paired study in balance, restraint, and continuity. United by material, technique, and motif, the two works unfold their relationship gradually, each clarifying the other through contrast.
Both pieces are formed and finished by Jo Byeong-gwan, and employ the white slip sgraffito technique known in Korean ceramics as bakji (剝地). A layer of white slip is applied to the celadon body, then selectively carved away. Through this deliberate act of subtraction, the celadon’s characteristic hue emerges—soft, mineral, and quietly luminous—allowing colour to appear as something revealed rather than applied.
The vase is shaped around measured contrast. Its rounded form is calm and self-contained, providing a continuous surface on which branches of plum blossom extend in gentle arcs, accompanied by cranes in restrained motion. The imagery unfolds through incision: branches, blossoms, and birds appear at once drawn and exposed, their lines guided by removal rather than addition. Fine glaze crackle settles across the surface over time, lending the form a subtle rhythm that deepens with use and viewing.
In Korean cultural tradition, the plum blossom (maehwa) blooms in late winter, symbolising endurance and integrity, while the crane is associated with longevity and moral refinement. On the vase, these motifs coexist in quiet equilibrium—resilience and long life expressed not through narrative emphasis, but through the calm persistence of form and line. A carved geometric band at the mouth of the vessel acts as a threshold, holding organic movement within a composed structure.
The plate responds to the vase through restraint rather than repetition. Its wide celadon surface remains largely open, with the plum blossom motif withdrawing to the rim. Selected lines of branch are carved through the white slip, revealing the celadon beneath, while the blossoms themselves are rendered in red clay. By confining the motif to the perimeter, the composition frames space rather than occupying it. The centre is left to breathe, allowing emptiness to function as an active element.
Here, the symbolism of the plum blossom is carried not only by image, but by placement. Resilience is suggested at the margins, steady and unassertive. As with the vase, a fine network of natural crackle animates the surface gently, ensuring that the plate reveals itself over time rather than at first glance. Finished with equal care on the underside, it remains complete whether held, used, or displayed upright on its stand.
Together, the vase and plate form a dialogue between volume and plane, movement and stillness. One gathers space inward; the other defines it through what is left open. Their shared use of bakji binds them materially, while their differing compositions allow each to retain its own voice.
This set does not seek unity through duplication. Instead, it offers coherence through restraint, allowing celadon colour, carved line, and muted red blossom to move between objects with quiet continuity—asking for time, proximity, and sustained attention rather than immediate recognition.
