“A living sculpture of patience and precision—each blossom a testament to quiet mastery.”
This exquisite celadon vase, handcrafted by renowned Korean ceramic master Kim Young-Soo of Icheon, embodies a rare marriage of traditional craftsmanship and poetic form. Measuring approximately 11 cm in diameter, it may be modest in scale, but it radiates the technical brilliance and spiritual depth of a much larger work.
The vase is created using the double-wall openwork technique (이중투각)—one of the most intricate and demanding methods in Korean ceramic artistry. First, two separate vessels are crafted: an inner chamber and an outer wall. The outer shell is carefully sliced, fitted over the inner vessel, and seamlessly joined. Only then does the most delicate phase begin: the piercing, carving, and shaping of every surface into layered chrysanthemum blossoms.
These blooms are not directly pierced into the flower shape. Instead, the artisan leaves behind the space for each blossom and removes the surrounding clay, sculpting every petal by hand and finishing it with a whisper of white slip (백상감) to enhance texture and visual depth. The blossoms subtly vary in size—an intentional rhythm that reflects the maker’s refined aesthetic sensibility and human touch.
Even the tall neck, though not double-walled, is adorned with precision-pierced patterns, adding vertical contrast and completing the silhouette with quiet elegance. The result is not just a vessel, but a sculptural object that casts gentle shadows through its floral latticework, animated by light and presence.
Touching the raised petals offers a tactile calm—a sensory experience as intimate as it is visual. Whether it stands alone on a shelf, cradles a single dry bloom, or catches the light by a window, this vase invites moments of stillness and reflection.
Though inspired by classical forms, its contemporary refinement makes it ideal for European interiors. It speaks to those who appreciate the slow beauty of handmade work—the collectors, the aesthetes, the guardians of quiet luxury.
Due to the handcrafted nature of this work, minor variations in shape, colour, and glaze are natural—and indeed, these subtle differences are what make each piece singularly yours.
