[Made to Order] Celadon Double-Wall Lidded Jar: Chrysanthemum Motif by Master Artisan

This exceptional Korean celadon jar, meticulously handcrafted using the rare double-wall openwork technique (이중투각), presents a vision of elegance and mastery. Created by Master Artisan Kim Young-Soo of Icheon, it combines delicate artistry with technical brilliance.

Measuring 17 cm in diameter, this compact jar captivates with a dense field of chrysanthemum blossoms—each blossom emerging through a subtractive process: the pierced surface suggests the flower’s outline, while the remaining clay is patiently sculpted into softly layered petals.
The lid echoes this floral motif, continuing the rhythmic beauty of layered blooms. Every flower varies slightly in size, a deliberate choice that reveals the artisan’s nuanced hand and refined eye.

The double-wall technique involves forming two vessels: an inner jar and a finely carved outer shell. The outer jar is sliced open along a curved seam, wrapped around the inner vessel, then sealed before being intricately pierced and decorated. This process demands exceptional calculation and control, especially at such a small scale, where the risk of failure increases and the room for error disappears.

After piercing, each leaf and petal is carved with fine tools and adorned with white slip, creating a vivid contrast between the soft celadon glaze and the crisp whiteness of the chrysanthemums.
The subtle texture of these raised blossoms offers a quiet tactile pleasure—an added layer of enjoyment for those who engage not only with their eyes but also through touch.
