The collector drawn to this work recognises the value of keeping, and the ways material things accompany a life over time.
“Beneath the cranes and pine branches, a red interior waits to receive the things that endure.”
In Korean Mother-of-Pearl Wedding Jewelry Chest: Longevity Motifs, Korean artisan Jang Tae-bok gives the act of keeping a richly articulated exterior. A low rectangular body, a gently pitched lid and spreading feet establish an architectural silhouette. The roof-like form gives the chest a sense of enclosure, while the space beneath the raised body prevents its dense ornament from appearing visually heavy.
The lid presents the broadest pictorial field. Pine branches extend across the surface, cranes introduce changes of direction, and rocks and clouds carry the eye between them. A red sun establishes a concentrated point of colour among the paler shell forms. The placement of these elements creates a landscape that can be followed gradually, with individual details emerging from the larger arrangement.
Around the body, the imagery changes in scale and rhythm. Cranes and turtles occupy the front among curling foliage; deer appear across the reverse; pine branches and birds continue on the sides. Moving around the chest therefore reveals related compositions rather than a single image repeated unchanged. The decorative treatment of the feet carries this attention down to the lowest part of the form.
Pines, cranes, turtles, deer and the sun belong to Korea’s established repertoire of longevity imagery. Their presence allows the chest’s wedding association to extend beyond the occasion itself. Read in this setting, the wish for long life becomes a wish for shared duration: a future expressed through the natural forms surrounding the objects placed inside.
The dangcho scrollwork gives this varied imagery a continuous visual setting. Its curling stems occupy the spaces between larger figures and lead the eye through the narrower panels. The black ground remains visible between the shell pieces, preserving the distinction between each contour. Pale birds and animals stand out against the more changeable violet, green and blue passages of the surrounding ornament.
This distinction between recognisable image and shifting colour is central to the surface. The figures can be read at a glance, yet their material setting rewards a closer and more prolonged view. Fine lines describing feathers, branches and animal forms bring detail into focus, while the iridescent shell alters its emphasis with the light. Accents of applied colour, including the red sun, provide firmer points within that changing field.
The front fittings bring the composition towards a physical action. A gold-toned fish-shaped lock occupies the centre, accompanied by a knotted ornament and red tassel. Beneath the lid’s expansive landscape, this small assembly identifies the point at which looking becomes opening.
The interior changes the encounter. A broad red compartment appears beneath the black underside of the raised lid, replacing the exterior’s many small divisions with an uninterrupted area of colour. On the interior floor, sambe, traditional Korean hemp cloth, lies beneath a red lacquer finish. Its woven texture remains perceptible, allowing the cloth to retain a material presence within the completed surface.
Here, the chest’s craftsmanship becomes intimate. The exterior offers images to be followed; the interior offers a space in which jewellery and keepsakes acquire their own arrangement. Opening and closing can become a modest recurring ritual, linking the work’s longevity imagery to the ordinary care of possessions. Over time, the chest’s significance may grow through what is kept, revisited and remembered within it.
