Mother of Pearl Octagonal Tray: Chrysanthemum and Vine Motif

This grand octagonal tray is a celebration of precision and poetry. Hand-inlaid with luminous mother-of-pearl, it draws from the timeless vocabulary of Goryeo-era lacquerware—where chrysanthemum blossoms bloom amidst delicate vines in an infinite, meditative rhythm.

At its centre, a radiant floral medallion anchors the piece, from which sixteen surrounding blooms unfold in perfect harmony. Each vine swirls outward with breathtaking finesse, their curvature whispering of the artisan’s patience and unyielding attention to balance. The motif is bordered by a classic “meander” key pattern, grounding the visual flow in architectural calm.

Unlike circular trays, the octagonal form lends a sculptural solidity—expressing both restraint and completion. In East Asian philosophy, the number eight (팔) symbolises wholeness and insight, making this form especially revered in architecture and craft.

The vine motif (당초문), with its endlessly flowing curves, symbolises unbroken vitality—echoing the quiet rhythm of natural growth, continuity, and inward strength.
Often blooming against the chill of late autumn, the chrysanthemum (국화) has long represented integrity and quiet perseverance—a flower admired as much for its timing as for its beauty.

Thanks to the natural properties of mother-of-pearl, the tray appears subtly different under shifting light and viewing angles—inviting a renewed encounter with each glance.
