A fret border circles the shoulder, separating the quiet celadon rim from the density below. Its repetition is mechanical, precise, a held breath before the bloom begins. Beneath it, the peonies take over completely, blossom folding into leaf, leaf into stem, with no ground left uncovered.

Each flower is drawn in a continuous black line, the petals built from repeating curved strokes, the centers marked with small dotted clusters.
