Made by Kim Sang-yoon, this vertical mother-of-pearl panel is built to guide the eye upward—from the patterned current to the stillness of the lotus bloom. It belongs to the same series and shares the same balanced method of making: thinly sliced shell pieces are assembled to articulate water lines, stems, and leaf edges with disciplined clarity, while larger shell pieces—kept close to their natural contour—are reserved for the carp and selected accents, allowing the bodies to carry a quiet curvature and a sense of lift. The result is a gentle relief that reads most clearly when light moves across the surface, opening and closing the shell’s colour in measured flashes.
Within the composition, two carp turn through a stylised wave, their motion answered by a bird perched along the lotus stalk. It is a deliberately poised arrangement: movement held in check, stillness made attentive. Against the dark ground, the scene does not become theatrical; it becomes lucid—an image that asks for repeated viewing rather than immediate consumption.
The lotus holds particular meaning in Korean visual culture. Rising cleanly from water, it has long been associated with virtue and purity, and—through the shared sound of yeon (연), lotus, and yeon (연), continuity—it can also suggest a wish for successive good fortune and steady progress. Set beside the carp, a motif often read as perseverance and upward movement, the panel forms a quiet encouragement: not a promise, but a composed reminder of endurance.
Framed in warm wood with a calm linen mount, the work carries its own atmosphere. In lower light the forms settle into silhouette and line; under stronger light, the shell briefly opens—cool blues, soft greens, warmer notes—then returns to shadow, as though the surface were breathing.
