Made by Kim Sang-yoon, this set of four framed panels is composed on a deep, dark ground so the iridescence of mother-of-pearl shellwork can appear and recede like light on water. Across the quartet, two approaches are held in deliberate balance: thinly sliced shell pieces trace stems, petals, and leaves with calligraphic clarity, while larger shell pieces—kept close to their natural contour—are reserved for key passages such as wings, blossoms, stones, and certain petals, allowing the surface to carry a gentle, tactile relief. The result is not a flat image, but a measured presence whose depth is felt as much as seen.
The imagery follows Sagunja—the “Four Gentlemen” of Korean visual culture: plum blossom, orchid, chrysanthemum, and bamboo. Loved by scholars and painters alike, these plants are less botanical study than moral portrait, each one associated with cultivated integrity. Together they mark the cycle of the year—spring, summer, autumn, winter—and the steadiness expected of a gunja, a person of refined character.
Plum blossom (spring) opens the set with resilience: flowers appear while the air is still cold, paired here with birds poised in quiet motion. Where larger shell passages gather in wing and blossom, the scene gains lift—dignity that arrives before comfort.
Orchid (summer) is arranged with restrained asymmetry: rock, slender leaves, and discreet flowers. The motif is built to suggest fragrance rather than announce it—virtue understood as something carried inward.
Chrysanthemum (autumn) gathers weight in layered petals. Its late-season bloom is mirrored in the patient articulation of small forms, inviting slow looking and a sense of composure under pressure.
Bamboo (winter) is defined by upright culms and angled leaves, punctuated by birds in flight. The form remains green through cold months, and the composition reads as firmness without harshness—straightness that stays living.
Each panel is held within a calm architecture of frame and mount, giving the imagery room to breathe and allowing the shell to change with the day’s light. Seen together, the four works function as a quartet: different temperaments, one ethic—seasonal change answered by steadiness.
