This exceptional Korean octagonal tray presents a radiant interplay of light, symbolism, and craftsmanship. At its heart, a pair of cranes—elegantly mirrored in flight—circle within a round medallion, their wings delicately outlined in glistening mother-of-pearl. The surrounding field blooms with peonies and fluttering butterflies, each motif meticulously inlaid upon a shimmering abalone shell background.
Unlike traditional circular trays, the octagonal shape evokes a sculptural sense of restraint and equilibrium. In East Asian thought, and particularly in Korean tradition, the number eight (팔, 八) signifies completeness and enlightened harmony—making the octagon a revered architectural form across temples, gardens, and crafts.
