Created by Icheon ceramic master Kwon O Hak, this pair of celadon vessels reduces composition to three essential elements: a rounded apple-like form, a restrained surface, and the meeting of two glazes. There is no pictorial motif to direct the eye. Instead, the vessels ask to be read through colour, curvature and the subtle behaviour of glaze after firing.

The apple form is deliberately simple. Its full, gently swelling body gives each glaze an uninterrupted field across which to settle and change, while the small upright stem-like neck introduces a concise vertical accent. By avoiding additional ornament, the form allows the transition between glazes to become the principal event. What might otherwise appear as a quiet vessel therefore becomes a close study of surface.

The two works share the same basic language yet develop different atmospheres. One moves through clear turquoise celadon into a warmer, muted green around the shoulder, its colour gathering softly around the upper body. The other creates a more pronounced division: luminous blue-green below gives way to a pale, silvery-grey upper field whose denser surface appears almost frost-like. Neither transition is mechanically sharp. Their boundaries soften, descend and vary around the circumference, preserving the evidence of glaze movement in the kiln.

This is why the double-glazed finish is central to the pair. Rather than using decoration placed upon the surface, Kwon allows one glaze to meet another and lets firing complete the composition. The artisan establishes the form, the colour relationship and the conditions of the surface, yet the final boundary remains responsive to heat and gravity. Control and uncertainty therefore coexist within each vessel.

The visible crackle across the glazed bodies further deepens this quality. Fine networks of lines move over the rounded surfaces without interrupting their calm silhouette. Seen closely, they introduce texture and time; from a distance, they recede into the overall field of colour.

Together, the two vessels suggest contrasting seasons. The cooler, pale-topped piece carries something of winter light, while the warmer green transition recalls the density of summer growth. This seasonal reading remains understated rather than illustrative. No leaf, fruit or landscape has been added to explain it; the association comes entirely through shifts of colour and atmosphere.

Presented as a pair, the works are not identical companions. Their relationship depends on difference. The repeated apple-like silhouettes establish continuity, while the contrasting glaze behaviours give each vessel its own temperament. One appears cooler and more mineral, the other softer and more verdant. Seen together, they form a quiet dialogue between repetition and variation.

What gives the pair its lasting presence is precisely this economy. Form is kept simple so that colour may be observed more closely; ornament is withheld so that firing itself becomes visible. In these two small vessels, Kwon O Hak allows celadon to be experienced not as a fixed colour, but as a living surface shaped by material, heat and time.
