This striking mother-of-pearl jewelry chest draws its silhouette from the traditional gyeongsang—a scholar’s desk long admired for its gently upturned edges. Here, that historic form is reinterpreted on a more intimate scale: the upper corners rise softly like the tips of embroidered beoseon socks, adding a subtle lift and grace to the chest’s presence.

Set against a high-gloss red body, the entire piece shimmers with inlaid mother-of-pearl in a palette of iridescent greens, violets, blues and soft pinks.
The top panel holds a magnificent peacock, its sweeping tail composed of shell fragments that shift in colour as the light moves. Butterflies hover above, while lush peonies unfold around the bird, creating the impression of a small, radiant garden resting atop the chest.

The front and side panels extend this atmosphere: peonies bloom in layered tones; butterflies drift among them; and smaller birds punctuate the scene with a sense of gentle rhythm. Together they evoke a courtyard in spring—alive yet composed, decorative but never excessive.

Opening the lid reveals a built-in mirror and a velvet-lined interior designed for rings, earrings, and treasured small pieces. Below, four drawers offer practical storage, each fitted with butterfly-shaped metal pulls—symbols of joy, renewal, and an auspicious household.
