This work is chosen by those who understand that the highest refinement often lies where difficulty has been made to appear effortless.
“Here, porcelain becomes not merely a vessel, but a structure of air, enclosure, and revelation.”
Made by Cho Byung-gwan, this white porcelain double-walled openwork vase stands out for the intelligence of its construction as much as for the beauty of its surface. Cho is an artist who continually seeks new formal possibilities, and in this work he pushes porcelain towards a particularly demanding threshold. The vessel is not built as a single continuous skin. Instead, it is conceived in layers: an outer pierced wall, an inner decorated wall, and the visual space created between them.
The outer wall is opened into a lattice derived from the form of a tortoise shell. This decision is more than decorative. The tortoise-shell structure introduces a sense of natural order, protection, and cellular rhythm. It wraps the body like a porous membrane, allowing the vessel to breathe visually. Through these openings, the viewer encounters the inner wall, where clouds and cranes have been incised with quiet delicacy. The result is remarkable. One does not simply look at the vase; one looks through it, into it, and around it. The work creates its own interior atmosphere.
That interior atmosphere is essential to the meaning of the piece. The cloud and crane imagery evokes an elevated and tranquil realm, but because it is partially veiled by the outer lattice, it never presents itself all at once. Instead, it appears in fragments, as if glimpsed through a screen. This gives the work an almost contemplative rhythm. It suggests an inner world that is protected rather than exposed — an enclosed poetic space contained within the body of the jar.
The difficulty of achieving such an effect in porcelain cannot be overstated. Double-walled openwork is among the most exacting techniques in Korean ceramics. The outer wall must be thin enough to preserve elegance yet strong enough to survive piercing. The drying time must be carefully extended and controlled so that the pierced structure does not warp or collapse. At the same time, the inner wall must also be completed and decorated in relation to the outer shell. Every stage depends on balance: thickness, moisture, timing, incision, and firing. What appears visually light is, in fact, the result of considerable discipline.
The artist’s finishing details show equal control. At the lower section, a lotus motif quietly anchors the form, giving the base a subtle ornamental cadence. At the upper section, four incised bands provide structural resolution around the neck and shoulder area. These elements act almost like thresholds — one below, one above — containing the complexity of the openwork middle.
What finally distinguishes this vase is its ability to join technical virtuosity with quiet imagination. The openwork exterior, the hidden inner imagery, and the soft luminosity of white porcelain all work together to create an object that feels at once protective and airy, intricate and serene. It is a work that reveals itself slowly, and for that reason it stays in the mind.
