This work belongs to those who understand inheritance not as repetition, but as the patient re-forming of knowledge through another material.
"The drum waits in silence, while its celadon chambers already seem to hold the memory of sound."
Kwon Ohak’s Korean celadon janggu occupies an unusual position between ceramic sculpture and performing instrument. Its hourglass body recalls one of Korea’s most recognisable percussion forms, yet the familiar wooden chamber has been replaced by fired clay. This substitution alters every stage of the work: how the body must be formed, how it survives the kiln, how its components are joined, and ultimately how sound is gathered and released.
The composition begins with opposition. Two swelling chambers face one another across a narrow central waist, each volume held in balance by the tension of the cords that cross the body. The janggu is therefore understood not as a single mass, but as a relationship between paired forms. Expansion is answered by contraction; the openness of the drumheads is answered by the compressed middle; the visual softness of the glaze is held against the mechanical discipline of the bindings.
This structure is especially demanding in ceramic. During drying and firing, the two chambers must contract without losing their correspondence, while the central passage must remain sufficiently aligned for the instrument to be assembled. The weight of the clay may cause the form to slump, and even a minor distortion can alter the placement of the skins and fittings. The kiln does not simply complete the object; it determines whether the intended instrument can exist at all.
The cloud-and-crane imagery has been placed across this technically vulnerable body with deliberate restraint. The sanggam decoration does not conceal the ceramic structure beneath an uninterrupted picture. Instead, small circular fields and dispersed motifs allow the celadon surface to remain visible, giving the eye intervals of quiet between one image and the next. This spacing reflects a Korean understanding of ornament in which meaning is strengthened by the unoccupied field surrounding it.
Within Korean symbolic culture, cranes embody longevity and elevated conduct, while clouds connect the earthly and celestial realms. On a stationary vessel, these motifs may suggest an enduring, suspended world. On a playable janggu, however, their meaning changes. The crane’s flight is no longer only represented; it is accompanied by vibration. The cloud’s movement is no longer merely visual; it is echoed by the passage of sound through the ceramic chambers.
The instrument therefore has two distinct states. At rest, the cords cross the celadon body as an external architecture, holding the drum in visible tension. The cranes remain suspended among clouds, and the craquelure appears as a fine map beneath the glaze. When played, the still arrangement is activated. Force passes through skin, ring and cord into the hourglass body, and the object that had appeared self-contained becomes a conduit for movement.
The sounded state reveals why ceramic was chosen as more than a visual alternative to wood. The fired celadon body is characterised by a larger and more expansive resonance than a conventional wooden chamber. Its harder material presence becomes audible. Rather than suppressing this difference, the work makes it central: the ceramic body is allowed to speak according to its own density and response.
This result could not be reached through ceramic knowledge alone. The making involved repeated failures, changes in proportion and sustained dialogue with those who understood the janggu through construction and performance. Instrument makers and accomplished players were approached for advice, and the work was revised in response to how it assembled, endured tension and sounded. The finished janggu is therefore not a solitary formal experiment. It contains an exchange between disciplines.
The process also changes how the object should be viewed. Its visual centre is not fixed at the front. The eye moves along the crossing cords, around the paired chambers, towards the circular crane motifs and back through the narrow waist. The composition asks to be read laterally and rhythmically, almost as one might follow a sequence of beats. Structure guides looking before performance begins.
In this work, tradition is not held safely at a distance. It is placed under pressure. Clay must withstand the pull of the skins; historical motifs must inhabit a functioning contemporary instrument; the stillness associated with celadon must accommodate a forceful and expanded resonance. The janggu lives precisely within these tensions.
Its visual refinement belongs to the silent state, while its fuller identity emerges through performance. Only when the celadon body, cloud-and-crane symbolism, mechanical tension and resonant sound are understood together does the work reveal its complete presence—not as a decorative reproduction of tradition, but as tradition made physically audible.
