This vessel is chosen by those who understand that the most enduring works of ceramic art do not merely depict the world—they re-form it through clay.

“Here, the mountain is not painted, the tiger is not illustrated, and the landscape is not recalled from afar; each is built into being, rising from the vessel’s skin with the quiet authority of earth itself.”

Kwon O Hak’s Buncheong Vessel: Tiger and Landscape Motif in Applied Relief, created in 2025 for the Icheon Ceramic Festival, expands the expressive possibilities of Buncheong ware by uniting its earthy immediacy with a strikingly sculptural imagination. The work is rooted in tradition, yet it moves beyond surface ornament into an arena where ceramic form, relief, and pictorial narrative converge.

The vessel’s elongated silhouette is essential to its effect. Its vertical sweep lends dignity and composure, while also offering an expansive field across which landscape and figure unfold with measured rhythm. Rather than serving as a neutral support, the body of the vessel becomes the terrain itself—its rounded shoulders and narrowing foot subtly reinforcing the movement of mountain, water, and animal presence.

At the centre of the composition is the tiger, one of the most resonant figures in Korean visual culture. In folk tradition, the tiger is never merely a beast. It can be humorous or fearsome, symbolic of mountain power, moral force, protection, and native vitality. Here, however, the tiger is neither folkloric caricature nor decorative emblem. Emerging through applied relief from the surrounding landscape, it acquires a palpable physicality. Its body presses into space with sculptural force, creating a vivid encounter between image and object.

This is where the work’s technical sophistication becomes most significant. The mountains, rocky forms, and tiger are created through deotbuchim, or applied relief—a process in which additional clay is attached directly to the vessel’s surface. Such a method demands extraordinary judgement. The applied forms must bond completely with the body while retaining their own definition, yet all parts shrink and respond differently as moisture leaves the clay. During firing, the risk intensifies: even a slight imbalance may cause cracking, warping, or separation. On a tall vessel, where structural stability is already delicate, the successful integration of such relief is particularly rare.

The Buncheong surface gives this complexity emotional warmth. Unlike more polished ceramic traditions that seek flawless refinement, Buncheong allows the life of the clay to remain visible. Its soft, grounded tonality and tactile character preserve a sense of directness—an honesty of material that suits the rugged immediacy of landscape and tiger alike. The relief does not contradict the Buncheong sensibility; rather, it intensifies it. The hand of the maker remains present in every ridge, contour, and uneven rise of the clay.

Visually, the work shifts with light. The raised mountains catch highlights, the dark trees recede into shadow, and the tiger alternately advances or settles back into the composition depending on the viewer’s position. This changing relationship gives the vessel a living quality. It does not offer a single fixed image, but an unfolding experience—one in which ceramic surface becomes both picture plane and low relief sculpture.

The red sun that appears against the quiet earth-toned field introduces a concentrated point of energy. Its clarity anchors the surrounding imagery and gives the composition an almost timeless atmosphere, as though the tiger moves not through a specific place, but through an imagined Korean landscape suspended between memory, myth, and seasonal stillness.

Ultimately, this vessel reveals why Buncheong continues to matter in the present. It is not simply a historical style repeated for reverence. In Kwon O Hak’s hands, Buncheong becomes a contemporary language of texture, volume, and cultural memory. The work draws from tradition, yet speaks through form with a freshness that feels immediate. It is at once ceramic, relief, and landscape—an object in which Korean sensibility is made tactile, powerful, and enduring.
