Historically, Gat refers to the formal headgear worn by Korean men from ancient times through to the early modern period. Archaeological findings from Goguryeo and Silla tombs show its deep roots, while in the Goryeo era it came to serve as official headwear—marking social rank and civic role. By the mid-Joseon period, the form we recognise today—commonly referred to as Heukrip (흑립), or “black hat”—was firmly established and worn by the yangban class.
