This porcelain drum is more than a decorative object. It is a conversation with time—a delicate harmony of form, silence, and memory—designed not to be played, but to be felt.

The inspiration for this celadon Janggu lies in a forgotten line of history. The artisan was moved by a rare Goryeo-era text describing galgo—an hourglass-shaped percussion instrument once crafted in celadon. This faint echo of the past became a lifelong pursuit: to revive a vision the world had almost lost.

For over 20 years, Master Artisan Kwon Oh-Hak of Icheon has explored how to recreate such a form in porcelain—a material never meant for the curves and tension of traditional drums. The double-chambered body, the proportions, the fragile structure: each aspect demanded not only technical ingenuity but emotional tenacity. Alongside a dedicated team, he created more than ten individual components to complete each drum, ensuring harmony in balance, tone, and silhouette.

The version you see here is not meant to produce sound—but rather to hold stillness. It represents the culmination of decades of research and quiet struggle. With its elegant celadon glaze and inlaid motifs of soaring cranes and swirling clouds, the drum becomes a symbol of longevity, peace, and aspiration. Even the accompanying stick holder, inspired by Korean theatre masks, whispers a blend of playfulness and reverence.

Place it in a softly lit corner, and its presence changes the rhythm of the room. It doesn’t call attention—it restores it. In a time of noise, it becomes a sanctuary of form and thought.
