It is chosen by those who recognise that protection and blessing often enter the home in modest forms.
“A small guardian seems to rest in the air, carrying with it the quiet promise of watchfulness and good fortune.”
This ceramic wall hanging takes the familiar form of bugeo, the dried pollock long held in Korean folk tradition as a sign of protection, abundance, and resilient life. Suspended on a simple cord, the fish is bound together with a twisted white tassel and an old-style coin charm, creating a composition that is both direct and symbolically complete. Nothing here is excessive. Each element has been included with clarity, so that the work retains the plain force of a traditional talisman rather than becoming a decorative fiction.
The form of the fish is kept deliberately lean and elongated, with the open mouth, alert eye, and tapering tail clearly defined. This matters to the meaning of the piece. In Korean custom, bugeo has long been associated with guarding against harmful presences, its wide-open eye understood as a vigilant force that watches over thresholds and newly entered spaces. For this reason, such forms have often been placed where fortune is invited and misfortune kept at bay: at entrances, in new shops, in homes, and even discreetly in a new car as a gesture of safety and auspicious beginning.
The coin charm deepens that protective role with a second layer of wish and intention. In Korean visual culture, the old coin carries associations of material blessing, circulation, and the welcoming of prosperous energy. Bound beside the fish, it completes a traditional pairing: one element watches and wards, the other gathers and invites. This is why the work has been made as a tied assemblage rather than as a single isolated form. The cord, knot, tassel, fish, and coin act together, each part contributing to the object’s quiet symbolic logic.
Its ceramic surface also deserves close attention. The warm pale ground is streaked with smoky browns and darkened markings that evoke the dryness, grain, and weathered texture of preserved fish. These irregular traces prevent the work from feeling polished in an abstract way. Instead, they keep it close to the humble materials and domestic rituals from which its meaning arises. The surface does not seek refinement through smoothness alone, but through the careful preservation of character.
Equally important is the vertical hanging structure. The fish does not sit rigidly; it hangs with a slight diagonal ease, as though caught between stillness and movement. Above it, the coin punctuates the composition lightly, while the white cord introduces a note of ceremonial clarity against the more earthen body of the fish. The result is balanced but not formalised. It retains the familiar spirit of an object made to accompany lived thresholds: openings, departures, arrivals, and beginnings.
What appears here, then, is not merely a ceramic rendering of dried pollock. It is a compact vessel of Korean cultural memory, carrying wishes for safety, prosperity, and unhindered passage. Its presence is modest, but its inheritance is enduring.
