“A serene winter landscape, hand-sculpted in clay—where each peak, tree, and rooftop emerges as if dusted by fresh snow.”
This exquisite Buncheong tea set, crafted by Master Artisan Kwon Oh-Hak of Icheon, redefines the traditional technique through an innovative additive relief method. This piece captures a tranquil snowy scene not with painted brushstrokes but with hand-layered clay, forming sculptural contours across each vessel.
The set includes a side-handled teapot, three teacups, and a sukwoo—a traditional cooling bowl used in Korean tea ceremonies to gently lower the temperature of boiling water, ensuring that the delicate tea leaves release their full flavour without bitterness.
Each surface unfolds like a landscape scroll: snow-covered mountains rise in soft relief, thatched rooftops peek beneath trees, and birds soar beneath a red sun on the teapot lid.
These details are not merely decorative—they are sculpted from a clay unlike the Buncheong base, a blend the master discovered through years of quiet experimentation. With its contrasting rhythms of drying and shrinking, it was born for delicate relief—where form rises gently, like snow building on still earth. With it, he layered each detail by hand, shaping a serene winter scene in silence. This technique demands split-second timing and absolute mastery, as a moment’s delay can crack or collapse the entire piece.
The firing process takes up to 1.5 times longer than conventional ceramics. The result? A richly dimensional surface with earthy textures and subtle shadows—offering not just a visual, but a tactile meditation.
The snowy landscape can be admired not only with the eyes, but with the hands—the raised textures invite touch, letting you feel the sculpted serenity of winter.
The natural ash-beige glaze, gently fogged with snowy tones, complements the theme of wintry stillness. Ideal for contemplative tea moments or as a collector’s art piece, this tea set invites slow appreciation—of both tea and craftsmanship.
Kwon Oh-Hak shared that during firing, the kiln sometimes produces a soft cracking sound—the sound of a piece failing due to a timing error in the relief process. “Each time,” he says, “my heart sinks.” That silence—when no sound comes from the kiln—is the sound of success, of a work that has endured fire and emerged whole.
This set is not merely a tool for serving tea—it is a winter poem shaped by hand, an ode to craftsmanship and patience.
Each piece is uniquely handmade—subtle variations in form and glaze are not flaws, but signatures of the artisan’s hand.
