The word used to describe fans in Korea is “Buchae / 부채”, which means a tool to move air. They are classified according to the material, technique or purpose for which they are made. In the beginning they can be made of feathers, hemp, silk with or without embroidery and hanji paper. A more popular variation of the Korean fan these days is the Hapjukseon, a fan invented in the Goryeo kingdom that is made up of many individually made ribs by joining two folding bamboo strips. The Jeopseon for its part are the simplest folding fans in decoration and number of ribs and the Danseon are the rigid round fans.
