Grand-Scale Celadon Base with Relief-Carved and Openwork Peony Motif

This exceptional Korean celadon vase is a true testament to the dedication and finesse of the master artisan. Combining two of Korea’s most sophisticated techniques—relief carving (bakji) and openwork piercing (tugak)—this work transcends decorative art to become a sculptural presence in any interior.

Painstakingly shaped and pierced by hand, the surface of the vase blossoms with peony flowers in high relief. Each petal is first layered with white slip, then intricately carved away to reveal the natural celadon green below. The deep curves and rich textures give dimension and life to the motif, while the red accents—applied with iron-rich slip and transformed through fire—highlight the vitality of each bloom.

The openwork piercing, one of the most challenging ceramic processes, invites both light and air into the form. During firing, as the clay body contracts, the voids risk warping or collapse. Preserving this delicate pattern intact demands both impeccable timing and the highest level of kiln control. The reward is enchanting: as light passes through the pierced floral structure, it casts dancing shadows that shift with the hours, animating your space with a quiet, living elegance.

In Korean tradition, the peony symbolises prosperity, beauty, and honour. Here, the motif is not merely illustrated—it is given architectural form, turning symbolism into atmosphere. Whether placed as a centrepiece or nestled into a contemplative corner, the vase transforms the environment it inhabits.

Its generous proportions—25 cm wide by 24 cm high—give it a striking presence without overwhelming the room. The celadon glaze’s cool green translucency softens its volume, while the meticulously carved structure gives it lightness and visual rhythm. It can stand beautifully as a sculptural object, or cradle dry botanical arrangements to accentuate its natural harmony.

Shipment processing time

• All orders are aimed to be processed within 5 daye after receipt of payment. Orders are not shipped on weekends and holidays.

Shipping rates and delivery estimates

• All orders are shipped by K-Packet, Air mail, EMS, Express Courier (UPS, Fedex, DHL Etc).
• K-Packet shipping is basic shipping service. K-Packet estimated shipping time is 14-21 days, depending on your region. If weight is over 2kg, K-packet service would be converted to Air Mail.
• EMS estimated shipping time is 7-14 days, depending on your region. Please note that Air Mail shipping method may not be available for all countries.
• Express Courier estimated shipping time is 5-10 days.
• Shipping charges for your order will be calculated and displayed at checkout.
• Parcels are sent tracked where possible, and you will receive an automated email with a tracking number once your order is processed.
